Screening of the film

1972, 134 minutes, in Italian with English subtitles

Based on the book Le avventure di Pinocchio. Storia di un burattino by Carlo Collodi [The Adventures of Pinocchio. Story of a Puppet, 1880-83.] Of the many interpretations possible, Comencini and Suso Cecchi D'Amico chose to portray Pinocchio as the hero of freedom, open to every possible criticism of the adventure and fantasy, which goes against the explicit lessons and teachings of moralists. Even if he maintains the principle of repression (transforming the boy into a puppet every time he behaves badly), the director condones it more explicitly than Collodi, who was too tied to the moral teachings of his time.  Featuring a Pinocchio in flesh and blood better demonstrates the conflict between freedom (of the child) and authority (of adults).
