Screening of the documentary                                Before Neorealism: Italy’s Forgotten Cinema by David Lee Morea A discussion with the Director David Lee Morea andAlberto Zambenedetti, Professor of Cinema Studies at Oberlin College, will follow   Thursday, November 19th at 6pmItalian Cultural Institute Directed by David Lee Morea, “Before Neorealism: Italy’s Forgotten Cinema” is the most comprehensive feature-length English-language documentary on Italian cinema during Fascism. Comprising clips, archival footage, and interviews with world-renowned scholars, the filmmakers investigate how the regime partnered with the entertainment industry to manipulate public opinion and create political consensus.

A graduate of New York University’s film and television program at Tisch School of the Arts (BFA ’08) as well as NYU’s Graduate College of Arts and Sciences (‘09), David Lee Morea is not only a working filmmaker whose clients include Donald Trump/Miss Universe, he is also a scholar of Fascist Cinema. His Master’s thesis, entitled “Battle of the Mind: The Telefoni Bianchi Films and Fascist Society” focuses on the use of cinematic technique in regime cinema to control the public consensus. Apart from shooting and editing his own footage David has worked on shows such as “American Idol”, “X Factor”, “Project Runway”, and “So You Think You Can Dance”.Alberto Zambenedetti joined Oberlin College in 2014 as Visiting Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow. He previously taught at the University of Toronto, at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, and at New York University. He is the editor of World Film Location Florence and has also contributed to the Venice and Rome installments in same series. His scholarship has appeared in various publications, such as Short Film Studies, Journal of Adaptation in Film & Performance, Annali d’Italianistica, La Fusta, and Studies in European Cinema. Alberto regularly writes reviews and festival coverage for the online film magazine Gli Spietati.Free and open to the public.  A reception will follow.
