An Evening of Italian Literature Selected Readings of Italian Short Stories in English Translationperformed and translated by Lawrence Garner Tuesday, April 12th6-8pm Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago – 500 N Michigan Ave, Suite 1450 Lawrence Garner has been performing on the stages of Chicago theatres for more than 20 years, a “second career” preceded by a 20-year “first career” as lecturer in political science at DePaulUniversity. He has translated 3 books from Italian and was a major contributor to “Italville”, (Exile Editions, 2005) a translation of contemporary Italian literature sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute. The readings include Alberto Moravia’ s story “The Thinker”, Mark Twain’s “Italian Without a Master”, an excerpt from Niccolo` Ammaniti’s “Steal You Away”, and Vitaliano Trevisan’s “Coffee”. The translations are all his original work, and they will be accompanied by a musical background. The translations are also punctuated with particularly colorful phrases in Italian from the original. Mr. Garner will be performing in “Proof” at the Royal George Theater from March 4 to April 3.Free and open to the public.
