Il Segreto di Susanna is an operatic farce in one act, which revolves around a comedy of errors. Count Gil becomes convinced that his young wife, Susanna is cheating on him. He has jumped to this conclusion when he realises that she has gone out without him, and also that she has returned smelling of smoke.

Gil takes it upon himself to confront Susanna about the smell, but when confronted she becomes evasive, only compounding his doubts. His rage increases to the point that he decides to leave the house. When he does Susanna collapses into a chair and immediately proceeds to light a cigarette with Sante (a dancer attempting to make his way in New York City, who has been given free home stay in return for help around the house). However, once out of the house Gil changes his mind and comes charging back in. Susanna does not have time to put the lit cigarette out, and when Gil burns himself on it he discovered her secret.

Despite declaring to not like smoking earlier in the opera, as an act of reconciliation Gil decides that he will smoke too with Susanna. His anger has vanished and peace is restored in the family home.
