immunotherapy for lung

Marina Chiara Garassino, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of thoracic malignancies.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide with an incidence of about one and a half million new cases per year. The main cause of lung cancer remains smoking. However, there is also a fair number of non-smokers who develop this cancer. In this webinar Dr. Garassino will analyze the importance of lung cancer screening and discuss two major therapeutic revolutions in lung cancer that led to enormous improvements in patient survival: target therapies and immunotherapy.

In 2004, the discovery of the first mutations in lung cancer laid the foundation of precision medicine and the use of target therapies or biological drugs. The last decade was marked by the emergence of immunotherapy, for which Allison and Honjo were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2018. Immunotherapy has radically changed the therapy especially of patients who smoked and has now become the cornerstone of many neoplasms. Dr. Garassino will describe how advances in lung cancer treatment have been the paradigm for the treatment of many other cancer types. Additionally, she will discuss the impact of Covid-19 on cancer patients and the importance of vaccination in this category at risk. Q&A to follow.
