BLACK SOULS (ANIME NERE) 2014, Francesco Munzi, Italy, 103 min.

“With its surprising narrative twists and handsome visuals, BLACK SOULS ends up being a far more original take on the Italian organized crime drama than first thought.”–John Bleasdale, CineVue

Set in the rocky terrain of Calabria at the “toe” of Italy, BLACK SOULS is the most authentic drama yet on the world of the ‘ndrangheta, the local crime organization that is considered more powerful and secretive than either the Neapolitan Camorra or the Sicilian Mafia.  The emphasis is on family drama, as two brothers–the flashy Luigi (Leonardi) and the businesslike Rocco (Mezzotta)–embrace the criminal system, while a third, Luciano, steadfastly rejects it.  When Luciano’s restless son Leo opts to follow in his uncles’ footsteps, the stage is set for a relentless and at times shocking internecine conflict.  Though compared by critics to GOMORRAH and THE GODFATHER, BLACK SOULS is actually closer to the enhanced realism of Visconti’s LA TERRA TREMA and ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS, but with Greek tragedy rather than opera in its DNA.  In Italian and Calabrian dialect with English subtitles.See the trailer: http://bit.ly/1CiPYd6Buy tickets at http://www.facets.org/
