The Human Figure in the Time of Leonardo
Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago
Tuesday, November 20, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Chicago, IL
In this lecture, Dr. Daniele Macuglia will investigate the professional relationships that arose between artists and anatomists during the Italian Renaissance. Starting with an overview of the collaboration between Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and Marco Antonio dalla Torre (1481-1511), we will ponder a series of relevant case studies, including those of Antonio del Pollaiolo (c.1431-1498), Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488), Michelangelo (1475-1564), Realdo Colombo (1516-1559), and Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564). The intent is to show how the two groups used depictions of the human body to create new possibilities for professional and intellectual development.
Historian and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago, Daniele Macuglia earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, at the Newberry Library, and at his alma mater.
