This series of six lectures and dialogues maps crucial moments in the history of Italian photography. We will consider the initial responses to the medium, how photography impacted the emergence of Italian national identity, and the rise of political propaganda. And we’ll explore the recent reconfigurations of Italian landscapes in contemporary art photography as part of a complex and ongoing identity quest — a critical approach with a focus on ethical, political, and environmental issues that has placed Italy at the forefront of international photographic debates.

Marco Garofalo has worked as a photo reporter for over 25 years focusing on social and cultural issues, mainly between Milan and the African continent. He has also worked on a range of architecture projects and personal research studies. As co-author of Energy Portraits, the themes of energy and environment have been at the centre of his work allowing him to collect many stories made of pictures and descriptions about energy access, energy poverty and energy transition for many years. His work has been published and exhibited in many magazines and galleries. The Energy Portraits reportage specifically has been displayed in many galleries and festivals, shortlisted for the SONY World Photo Award in 2020, won the InnoEnergy 2019 award in Copenhagen, and the Energia Italia in 2018 in Rome. www.marcogarofalo.com
