Prof. Giovanni Aloi will lead a conversation on nature and ecology in Italian arts, with guest speaker Gabi Scardi, art historian, curator, professor and writer. Scardi’s main field of research covers the practices at the intersection between visual art, anthropology, urban culture and ecology. She investigates contemporary art, the public sphere and collaborative methodologies.

Gabi Scardi curated the restoration of Alberto Burri’s Teatro Continuo, Milan, 2015. Since 2011 she has been the artistic director of nctm e l’arte, a project by ADVANT Nctm. Since 2019 she has been President of NAHR, Nature Art & Habitat Residency (Bergamo).
She collaborated internationally with museums and institutions, curating exhibitions and public projects; among them: Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice; Museo della Pietà Rondanini, Milan, Pac, Milan; Museo del Novecento, Milan; Procuratie Vecchie, Venice; Fondazione Pini, Milan; University of Chicago; Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, Milan; MAXXI, Rome; Biennale di Venezia, Venice; Pitzer College, Los Angeles; Milan Provincial Authority; Royal Academy, London; Mart Museum, Rovereto; Louisiana Museum, Copenhagen.
Among the most recent projects she has curated: Chiaralice Rizzi e Alessandro Laita. The Memory of The Air, (cat.), and Emilio Fantin. Risvegli, (cat.); both of these projects are supported by the Italian Council, (8th and 9th edition), a program for the promotion of contemporary Italian art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Prof. Giovanni Aloi is an author, educator, and curator specializing in the representation of nature in art. He has published with Columbia University Press, Phaidon, MIT, Laurence King, and Prestel. He has contributed to BBC radio programs, worked at Whitechapel Art Gallery and Tate Galleries in London, is USA correspondent for Esse Magazine, and a regular public speaker at the Art Institute of Chicago. Aloi has curated exhibitions in the US and Europe. He currently teaches modern and contemporary art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Sotheby’s Institute of Art New York and London.
This event is part of the series Voci della Natura: Ecologies and Nature in Italian Arts, the theme selected by the Italian Cultural Institute in Chicago for 2022. The program explores the role of Italian art and sciences in redefining the perception of nature and ecology, through new and original perspectives.
