Cancer as a Global Health Crisis

Damiano Rondelli completed his medical training in Hematology at the University of Bologna, Italy, where he also started his academic career. In 2002 he joined the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) as the Director of the Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program. He is currently the Michael Reese Professor of Hematology and Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology & BMT in the Department of Medicine and the Associate Director for Global Partnerships in the Center for Global Health of the College of Medicine of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
In addition to his clinical and laboratory research in blood cancer and transplant immunology, he leads also a global health [GlobalBMT] initiative to collaborate with institutions in low-middle income country to establish low-cost BMT for underserved patients with cancer or blood disorders. His GlobalBMT initiative currently includes partners in Nepal, India, Nigeria, Bolivia, Ukraine and Cuba.
The event is organized in collaboration with AIRIcerca and is part of the series “Caffè scientifico” (Café scientifique)
AIRIcerca is an association of Italian researchers in the world, created with the aim of promoting networking among Italian researchers that live and work in different countries, in the hopes of creating scientific collaborations and exchanging useful information. Since 2017 AIRIcerca has had a Chicago chapter, which attracts Italian researchers active in the City of Chicago and the surrounding areas.
