Il trovatore: Verdi’s Worst or Verdi’s Best?

Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago

Musicologist Jesse Rosenberg, Northwestern University, will lead this discussion, presented on the occasion of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s production of Il trovatore, November 17 – December 9.

For many years, the reception of Verdi’s opera Il trovatore (1853) presented a paradox: although it was popular with the public, many critical assessments were highly negative, holding the opera to exemplify all the worst traits of the genre. In the past half-century, critical opinion has notably shifted, with an ever-growing reputation of Il trovatore as an unqualified masterpiece. This presentation will explore the opera and its evolving reputation, with a focus on its perceived pro’s and con’s.

Prof. Jesse Rosenberg received his PhD from New York University, and has been on the musicology faculty of Northwestern University since 1998. Both as a scholar and teacher he specializes in 19th-century Italian opera, and has published his researches on Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and Mascagni, as well as studies on opera and religion.
