“Italian Design: Designing Invisible Cities”
Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 6pm
Kaplan Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship
Illinois Institute of Technology
3137 S Federal Street
The Consulate General of Italy in Chicago, The Italian Cultural Institute in Chicago, and Illinois Institute of Technology are pleased to present: “Designing Invisible Cities”, a lecture by Prof. Francesco Zurlo (Politecnico of Milan)
Italian design has critically anticipated some of the contemporary design issues: design of services, design for social innovation, design for digital transformation, design thinking, the contribution of design for innovation policies and policies aimed at socio-cultural integration, design for organizations. Cities of the future will actually increasingly face all of these issues.
The speech will take inspiration from an intriguing book written by Italo Calvino (Le Città Invisibili, Einaudi, 1972), to tag some of these (Italian) phenomena, proposing several case studies on the connections between the city and human relationships, exchanges, memory, signs, desires.
A roundtable with Michelangelo Sabatino, Dean, IIT College of Architecture; Anijo Mathew, Associate Professor, IIT; Martin Felsen, Director, Master of Architecture Program IIT and Associate Professor and a reception will follow.
Francesco Zurlo received his Phd in industrial design and is Full Professor of Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano. He teaches courses on Integrated Product Design and Management Engineering.
He is Deputy Dean of the Design School and Head of the Courses in Product Design (BA+MAs). Founder and Director of CI.lab (a Politecnico’s research lab focused in Creative Industries), he is on the board of ADI (Italian Design Association) Index. He is director of the Executive Master in Design Strategy and System Innovation, and co-director of the Master in Strategic Design and the Master in Furniture Design at Politecnico di Milano.
